The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce its selection of Penn State's Alisha Glass as the 2008 CVU.com National Setter of the Year.
A junior from Leland, Mich., Glass put up a year of No. 1 finishes. In addition to a National Title, Penn State was first in the country in team hitting percentage at .390, while finishing second in kills per set with 14.95. Glass led the nation with 12.5 assists per set.
In other statistical categories, the 6-0 Glass averaged .55 kills per set on .319 hitting, putting back nearly a block per set at 0.98. She also added 1.83 digs per set.
The other four spots on this year's list are taken by sophomores and juniors — all new to the list this season. Carli Lloyd of California, Iowa State's Kaylee Manns, Nevena Djordjevic from Oregon and Rice's Meredith Schamun all earn CVU Top Five honors.
Third in assists per set at 12.0, Lloyd guided California to a No. 7 ranking in hitting percentage and No. 3 in kills per set. The sophomore also chipped in 0.83 kills, 2.42 digs and 0.59 blocks per set for the Golden Bears.
Behind Manns' direction, Iowa State made its best ever NCAA Tournament run, proving it was a team to be reckoned with. With the Cyclones averaging 14.25 assists per set to rank 13th in that category, Manns finished fourth in assists average, tossing out 11.69 per set, while having the second-best overall total with 1508. The junior was also solid across the board as she added 76 kills and 81 blocks to go with 2.63 digs per set.
Oregon turned in another solid year, and despite battling through some tough Pac-10 competition, finished ranked sixth in both kills per set and hitting percentage. Djordjevic, a junior, was ninth in the nation with 11.58 assists per set. She added 66 kills, 58 blocks and 212 digs.
The other sophomore on the list, Schamun helped Rice orchestrate a complete turnaround from last season's losing record. The Owls improved from 13-17 to 23-8 and earned an NCAA tournament berth in the process. Schamun was 10th in the country in assists per set, finishing with 11.58, as Rice was ninth in kills per set. She also averaged 0.7 kills, 2.21 digs and 0.32 blocks per set.
