The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce its selection of Rice's Meredith Schamun as the 2009 CVU.com National Setter of the Year.
A junior from Murrieta, Calif., Schamun led Conference USA in assists on her way to earning conference co-Setter of the Year honors. She finished fifth nationally as she averaged 11.95 assists set while Rice was ranked No. 3 in kills per set.
Additionally, the 5-11 setter tied for the team lead in double-doubles with 11 as she averaged 2.38 digs per set. She added to that nearly a kill (0.93) and almost a half of a block (0.46)
Schamun earned conference Setter of the Week honors four times on the season, and was also named the CVU National Player of the Week after leading Rice to upsets over Southern Miss and Tulsa to claim the conference tournament title.
Last season Schamun was also honored among CVU's Top Five setters.
The other four spots on this year's list see a couple more players returning in Alisha Glass of Penn State and Iowa State's Kaylee Manns. Sarah Rumley from Kentucky and Lipscomb setter Stefine "Jake" Pease round out the CVU Top Five.
Last season's Setter of the Year, Glass was again one of the best in the country, leading Penn State to another National Championship. The senior averaged 11.9 assists per set, as Penn State was the No. 1 team in hitting percentage.
With Manns' running the offense, Iowa State had another successful season ending with an NCAA Tournament run. In addition to averaging 12.09 assists per set, Manns, a senior, was one of the top defensive setters, scooping 3.28 digs per set. She also hit .331 with 0.7 kills per set.
Also a senior, Rumley proved to be an all-around threat, tossing out 11.87 assists per set for a Kentucky team that finished in the top 10 in both percentage (10th) and kills per set (sixth). Rumley added 1.06 kills per set while scooping 2.02 digs in leading Kentucky to an NCAA Tournament Regional appearance.
The other junior on the list, Pease is a first time honoree after guiding Lipscomb to an Atlantic Sun championship and the best season in team history. The Lady Bisons ran the conference schedule at 20-0 during the regular season, earning their first-ever regular season title, then earned an NCAA Tournament bid with a conference tournament championship as Pease earned A-Sun tournament MVP honors. Pease averaged 11.8 assists, 2.73 digs and 1.06 kills per set on the year as Lipscomb finished fifth nationally in kills per set and 19th in team hitting percentage.
